The one thing that all of us know won't change, is the fact that everything is going to change. How do we as managers and leaders handle this reality?
I think one thing we all need to consider, that's different than a lot of people promote these days is to be committed to our jobs and company we work for.
We've all read the stuff out there how people aren't working for more than a few years on a job and then change to another. While that's not true of everyone, it is for the majority.
Now the point in bringing that up is that it seems that we need to work as if we'll never leave the company, even if we think that we eventually will. Quality work and value to the company comes from within us, and going about our responsibilities day-to-day with the attitude that we're here forever, does something to enhance your job performance.
If you're always thinking about what's next for you, you never focus on what's there today. This can have a detrimental affect upon your work performance and advancement in the company or to another job. Can those you've worked with wholeheartedly say that you've given everything you've got to do your job? That's the type of thing that will be there if you work as if you're never going to leave.
Focus and give yourself to the best of your ability to the projects and work at hand, and you'll eventually get to that place where you want to be.
