A business or department must be considered a living thing; an organism. As such, we all must understand that it will always constantly changing. Because that's true, we must keep the attitude of being flexible always within ourselves.
Any type of human relationship we're in, will always be in a state of flux and the same is true of our business and those it exists for.
If we want to thrive as managers, we need to build our "flexible" muscles. We must continually look for shortfalls and deal with them while strengthening those things that we want to remain and grow. There must be an empathy and unfeigned care for our customers as we adapt to the changes they are going through.
Another big thing is to realize that we can sometimes lose little battles while we are still winning the war. The very nature of flexibility is to comprehend that not everything is set in stone. Things that have worked even last year may need a major overhaul as the needs of people change: our workers and customers, suppliers or partners.
We also have to be careful of loyalties being in the wrong place. We can be loyal to mentors and leaders with respect while challenging with what needs to be changed.
Keep an eye on your competitors. Are they moving with flow or not? What does that mean to you? Are they moving smartly or digging themselves a hole? What do you learn from it?
There must be an understanding of the difference between hype and real things that will add value to the business and our customers.
The major idea here is to hold things lightly while you do the business of the day. This puts us in the place of being nimble and quick when we have to be, and staying the course when needed.
