With all the focus on Internet social-networking and creating of communities, it can sometimes be lost on brick and mortar businesses that many successful ventures have started there, far before the online version.
Whether it's local restaurants, Starbucks (SBUX) or Barnes and Noble (BKS), community is a big part of the experience.
This is one of the key differentiators that will never go out of trend. Creating an atmoshere of camaraderie and friendship in your business, does more to enhance your success than possibly anything else.
It starts with owners and managers. People need to feel welcome as honored guests in your place of business. Everybody likes to be treated special and welcome when they arrive. The main thing is to make sure its real and not just a passing fad that you read about and halfheartedly try to implement.
Now besides owners and managers embracing this, the other side of it is "hire for community." Hire people that love community and social interaction. It's not hard to ask questions that determine if someone is a loner or a social person. It's the same as in every other aspect of business: you must hire what it is you are trying to create. This helps deal with most of the large problems that come from inaccurate hiring.
Make community part of who you are and it will bring great rewards.
