When a company introduces new, innovative ideas that are expected to be embraced across the entire organization, there arises the problem of the push and pull between the old and the new.
This is simply part of human nature and will happen in all businesses or departments.
We as managers must understand that we will have to confront the deep seeded ways of doing things and thinking that was a part of the former way things were done.
Remember that overall, people always resist change, some more than others. If you're responsible for other managers, they are the first ones that must be convinced and required to adapt to what is being put forth. They must buy in or the changes will fail.
In a sense, it is like starting a new business, and the questions that were asked then will be asked all over again: What is our unique selling proposition? Who are our customers? What value are we adding to people's lives?
With the adoption of the new, it could possibly change the market you have and create a whole new one. So you may have to forget the old one and concentrate on the new. Meaning that you may still serve the old market, but innovation will create new ones, and you must know how to market to them in a different way than the old.
Helping workers forget the old and adapt to the new is a challenging part of managing innovation. Have you found this to be true?
