Workers need to know that management cares about them. As a result we have to take time occasionally to ask them what it is they need to make the workplace better.
The reason I say 'occasionally' up above is because we're talking foundational things that aren't the type of things that should be asked all the time. This is in contrast to projects or everyday things that need to be dealt with spontaneously as they happen. That's a different type of question that will be answered in the moment and will need to be taken care of right then.
So how do we ask the right question concerning our workers' needs?
The most important thing is to ask the to give you at least 6 things that they feel they need. Why? Because the first three things they'll say are salary, increase the number of workers and decrease the workload. You can count on that in most cases. So you want them to come up with at least 3 more things so that you can respond to some of their concerns quickly.
The usual three aren't things that can simply be changed overnight. So they need to be shown that you care about what they want to see happen, and the only way to do that is to get them to tell you things that can be done almost immediately, or plans put in place to begin the process.
This is one of the best ways to keep your employees motivated and feeling that you legitimately care for them. Just make sure they come up with more than three answers.
