There is a lot of talk that goes around these days about the difference between leaders and managers. I'm not going to quibble about terms, but one thing that defines both is vision.
Now what some usually try to distinguish is that leaders originate visions and managers take the vision and make it a reality. When you come right down to it: who cares? Either way, a great manager must have a great vision whether it originates with them or someone else. They still must take it and embrace it as theirs.
Essentially, great managers will be entralled and captivated by a vision and get others to take it as their own also.
This vision will be clear of where things must go and demands a commitment and passion to bring that future about.
Great managers don't just give lip service to a vision (you can't fake it for long), but they give themselves wholeheartedly to it and evangelize others in the company to believe in it also.
Once everybody grabs hold of it, then the manager makes it their passion to become a battering ram to clear all obstacles out of the way of making it happen. If not, the vision and purpose becomes clouded and its impetus and push slows down and clouded. To become successful it must remain clear to those in the company.
It is not just a matter of having a great vision as being absolutely intrigued with it and so grabbed by it that it fills their minds day and night; they don't let anybody forget what it is. This is the type of manager that almost never misses in their target as everybody gets on board and makes it a reality.
Do you have this type of vision fill you with passion in your work? What have been the results?
