We all know that the great majority of people will respond to the possibilty of change by resisting it. It's simply human nature for that to be the initial response. What we have to be careful of is that we don't let that resistance linger and create a culture of resistance that makes it extremely difficult to get anything done.
How can we get people involved and excited about changes in the company and future, exciting things that could happen?
One method that has worked really well is gather a representative group of people together. They should be creative, innovative, future thinking people that come from various departments and job functions with diverse points of view.
You look for and prompt the participants for their ideas and thoughts about what they identify as the key to where the company needs to go and the current and future trends that will have a major impact upon the business.
Once that is determined you can review what the company has historically stood for and its history and what the major things that have been learned are.
Taking all that into account, then you can take these insights together and develop and strong, powerful, exciting vision of the future everyone there wants to be. Then from there to develop the first steps of the plan that will take you to where everyone wants to go.
Not only does this create a plan and vision, but it gets everyone there involved and part of the process. Once it has been developed and begun, you have in place a group of people throughout your business that are completely committed to its success and will promote it wherever they are.
It has been a very successful practice that has worked well with those that have taken these steps.
