One of the things that all of us do, but probably don't get too much out of, is reading those motivational management books that make everything look so inspiring and glamorous.
While I read and have read a ton of books covering all aspects of management, finance and business, most of the time they're more for fun and entertainment than something that give real, concrete, practical insights that will really help you.
Now once in a while you'll find a nugget that makes it worthwhile, but simply realize that its more of an escape mechanism than it is something that truly makes you better.
True improvement takes a lot of time and effort, along with recognizing what it is that you need to improve in. That's one of the reasons you may go to several jobs before you hit your managing stride as the culture itself may not be conducive to your strengths.
The point in all of this is to take everything with a grain of salt and simply enjoy the entertainment value of the book while realizing that success is a difficult road.
It's better to recognize one thing that you need to improve in and work on that until you get it to the place where you feel its everything that you can do. Once you do that, go ahead and go after another area where you want to improve. This takes time, and nothing but steady paying attention and working on the issue will work.
Just don't let managerial entertainment writers put you in an illusory world that no one really lives in.
