We can never allow ourselves to get to a place of complacency and self-satisfaction in our businesses or departments, but must be always looking for ways to improve.
On the other hand many people I have talked to misunderstand the difference between being content or satisfied. Self-satisfaction in management usually means that you think everything is going great and ok. Whereas contentment means that you understand the reality that nothing is ever perfect and you can be content with that fact.
Contentment deals with you being able to relax and focus on what is happening around you without being always taken on emotional and stress swings. While self-satisfaction brings you to the place where you don't bother to look at all.
We can work relaxed but extremely focused without entering into the chaos of everything. When you enter the chaos, it's like entering a tornado where nothing seems to be anchored or solid. You just go round and round in circles.
Contentment has to do with knowing, at this time, you're where you're supposed to be, and as a result are able to handle what comes your way.
Self-satisfaction makes you think you've arrived and you lose the vigilance that a manager needs to have to stay on top of things.
