Advancement and Knowing Yourself

options2.jpgSometimes it can be hard to know whether you should try to go further in your management career or not. Somewhere you will find your limits and it can be disappointing when you do.

When considering this we need to realize that our own advancement need to be managed also.

The first thing to do is to take an honest inventory of yourself. What will each advancement entail? Do you have the inner strength to deal with the added responsibilities? If you don't, can you work on what is needed to add that which will make you successful? There are times when we may not know and have to be willing to take the risk.

Here are some observations from somebody that had to deal with these issues that had great success moving up the corporate ladder.

She said that the one thing she was willing to do was when new opportunities were presented, she was willing to take on the projects.

Along with that, the willingness to take career risks that there was no guarantee they would work out.

She took things one step at a time and proved herself at each level, while focusing only on that project at hand.

While not always having depth of experience, she did have breadth she brought to the table. She had an interest in many things.

She understood herself and that she could function in high-stress environments. This is extremely important to know concerning your inner makeup. This is where a lot of risk in advancement lies. Don't be afraid to honestly look within to see if you can handle it.

Last, you need to know that the higher you go, the more top levels of the business you'll have to deal with. You not only go deeper; but wider.

All in all, she progressed and has had a great career. The key was knowing her strengths, taking each step and being excellent in it and willing to embrace high-stress environments. The bottom line is that we must be willing to take some risk and able to work with increasing numbers of executives across a wider spectrum of the company.

Keep all of these things in mind as you reach for how high you want to go.

What things have you discovered in your climb to the top?
