One of the reasons that companies can be caught off-guard with their employees, as far as being pleasantly surprised at their contributions to the company, is that when they are hired, there is something that is very difficult to measure in some, and that is what's inside them.
We can ask every type of strategic question we know to search out who they are, but sometimes a human being doesn't even know what's inside of them until situations arise that reveal it.
So many still focus in on all the tools of business and management; strategies, techniques, technology and a number of other things. All of these are important, but it doesn't really show what's inside of someone that will be the deciding factor in most cases to success.
With you as a manager, it's the same. While training is important, it can never provide that something within that determines who you are and what you can do.
Once in awhile, it is a good thing to take some time and "mine" yourself and draw from your inner resources. Things like determination when things are pushing against you. Persistance when something won't budge. Maybe more than anything else: being resourcful and making use of all that you are to solve problems and handle situations.
Learn to step outside the situation and look at it as an observer with no connection and you'll find yourself beginning to draw upon those inner resources that will provide the answers.
