Focus is an interesting thing. There are times in our work that it is paramount to or success, and other times it can drag on the creative side and growth of the company.
Focus on the current customer, project or service is crucial to getting things done in the now. To endlessly daydream of the next thing while working on an existing one causes harm to both. So we must have those in the company that thrive on focused end results.
Now on the side of innovation and creativity, focus is not good at all. Focus in this sense is the thing that keeps us in that box we're always encouraged to think outside of. Here you don't want focus but an unchained release of our imaginations and minds.
We're not trying to necessarily solve problems here, but just letting ourselves flow and discover.
Obviously there are different stages that this entails. If there is a project that is stuck, we do need to solve the problem, but focus on the problem is not always the answer. Sometimes just letting yourself detach from the situation and look at it in an unfocused way, brings better results.
If you're trying to innovate and create in various areas of the company unrelated to existing ways of doing things, this is where there has to be total letting go of what is and seeing where everybody can go with what can be.
Managing this is understanding what part of the process you're at and how attached or detached your employees need to be.
