A recent survey revealed that only 25 percent of employees said that they worked as good as they were able. Another revelation the survey showed was that another 25 percent said that they were only working at about half the rate they really could, while the other have said they could increase their quality by at least another 25 percent.
What was revealed by the workers for this action were these 5 reasons:
1. Hardly any supervision
2. Lack of training
3. Weren't allowed to be in the decision-making process
4. No reward system in place for great work
5. Advancement was not encouraged
Obviously these numbers from the survey were across a wide spectrum and won't apply the same to all companies. Some will experience more and some less.
The major way to deal with this is to engage your employees in the vision of the company and show them how much they mean to its success. That's what the 5 reasons above are really saying - that there is no connection with what the company represents, or what it can do for the worker.
There is obviously a lack of understanding of how valuable employees can be to a company. The very fact that they responded to the survey with the list above shows that they wanted to be more engaged and productive but weren't being given the opportunity.
Are there things you can think of that could increase your employees interest increased productivity?
