One of the areas where being a perfectionist and growing a company can clash, is when you're offered more business than you can possibly handle and have a number of decisions that you have to make.
You have to take into account the quality you demand, whether you'll need to hire, if you should even accept the new business and maintaining what you already have.
The really great businesses have this down to a science. They refuse to grow unless they have absolutely everything in place to adhere to their standards.
I've heard some say that its better to put out a good product or service than to wait for a perfect one to be introduced. Now in some industries, I don't think that this is a bad strategy. It depends on the type of quality that customers expect from the particular field that you're in.
In high-end, high-quality luxury products or services, you need to grow at a slower pace or make sure that you're getting it right when it is offered to the public. If you're one of the higher priced people in your particular niche, that is another area where the quality must be maintained at a superior level.
Even in the carpet cleaning area there are what are considered the very best and those below it. The ones that are the best and charge accordingly, must perform at a high level to justify their prices. People may gripe about the prices a little, but they keep coming back because of the quality.
In high-quality and high-priced products and services, I believe that you must pace yourself to grow at a level that maintains your brand as the best in its field.
Have you found this true in your business or department?
