In the area of investing, one of the things one always has to watch out for is speculating. Even now it is rampant all over the world as people thoughtlessly pour their money into investments that are risky at best, and could be devastating to their personal wealth.
Now the reason I bring this up is to look at this word speculation and how it can affect your business or department.
The way to manage speculation is to understand change in general. Even when there is a huge amount of change happening in the business world, there is still a period of time where the change is embraced and transferring of assets, ideas, innovation and even employees toward that change is begun. Yet it is done over a period of time.
We must discipline ourselves not to get involved with "gold fever." Forget everything else, the rush is on, head west young man (woman). A lot of this is hype. Hype doesn't always mean that something isn't trending a certain way and you need to get on board. Many times hype is related to the alleged speed that you need to get the thing done.
I know we hear about business at the speed of light etc. But in reality it still takes time to go from one way of doing things to embracing another.
It is more important for a manager to understand what that time frame is when it comes to this. Otherwise you will base decisions upon speculation rather than solid research, facts and timing. So manage your speculative urges and take a deep breath. If you're aware of a trend, you will get there as long as you're shooting for it. That's the delicate balance that we need to learn: You've got to start things in motion, while maintaining what's working for you now, and at the same time know when to give it the push it needs and when to tighten the reigns.
Think of these things as you are pressed from all sides to dip into the water. Have you found yourself at times rushing ahead and finding that you're not behind in the game after all?
