An interesting thing happens when you reach a certain stage of your career and you're promoted. What usually happens when you're promoted is that the mentor you had was also promoted or a person you had valuable interaction with has left. This leaves you at the top of the division or department you're over.
What inevitably happens to many people at this point is that you suddenly feel that the safety net that was there before, now is gone. You have the desire to reconnect with you mentor like you did before, or the one that you got the most out of bouncing ideas and thoughts off of.
At this stage we all need to come to grips with succeeding on our own. You wouldn't have been promoted unless those over you thought you could do it. They've watched your progress and success at the level your were at and now believe you can have more responsibility handed to you. Part of that is not being nursed as much as you were. Now you are in a mentoring position also and will provide some safety and protection to the people that you are helping along.
This is one of those unique situations where success through promotion also brings with it the loss of something. That's what many feel when they begin in their new position and responsibilities. You've moved out of security and a comfort zone that you had been enjoying.
All you can really do is let go of what was and apply yourself to the new. The sooner you let things go, the more you'll make great contributions with the new.
