Japan is facing a labor shortage that isn't too far away. In response they have been upping the quality of robots and their numbers.
In the past and currently, the robots have been used in factory production lines, but with more advanced models working in higher traffic areas, there has to be much safer guidelines in place.
It is believed that the robots in Japan, be put to use in nursing, security and cleaning which will put them in contact with humans much more frequently.
"METI officials said Saturday the guidelines will require manufacturers to install ample sensors to minimize the risk of the robots running into people and use soft lightweight materials so they do not cause harm if they do so.
"They will also be required to install emergency shut-off buttons."
They are also looking into creating an independent organization to ensure safety and put legal systems in place to provide insurance when accidents happen.
Dang. Pretty soon it's not even going to be safe to walk in hospital hallways.
