In our continuous trial-and-error concerning products and services, it is noteworthy to realize that it is always wise to look for things that don't work, as a way to discover new things that will.
This is actually a thing to train and remind ourselves and our workers about on a consistent basis. A large number of products have been created by accidental happenings; including ice cream, post it notes, frisbees and Reeses Peanut Butter Cups.
One of the limiting aspects about attempting to increase quality and eliminate any type of accident (accidental happenings, not accidents that could hurt you), is that we also eliminate the potential to discover all sorts of other things that result from mixing things together that we've never thought about before.
The part that we need within our companies and within ourselves, is to understand that we do need to focus on the project we're on as we attempt to accomplish what it is we're trying to create, while at the same time looking at the overall interactions that are going on in the process.
What happened that is unusual during the process itself? Was there something that was observed that surprised you or your team? Did it make you think of something unrelated to what the original purpose in doing it was? These types of questions and observations are what can help you to uncover and find those gold nuggets while you're searching for something else.
This doesn't only have to be related to products, there is a lot of discovery waiting in processes and services that can be found also.
Learn to love unanticipated responses to things, it may be the next big discovery for your company. Hey, your next success may just be an accident waiting to happen.
