If you believe that most people really want to do well at work, you can take that and use it in a right way to draw out of them everything that they have to give and offer to the company.
The first responsibility in all of this, is to hire right in the first place for attitude, before anything else. It the right attitude is there, then start to look at their qualifications. I would have instilled in the company process of hiring a series of interviews based upon attitude being the first interview. Why bother with all the rest if that isn't there first.
Now I'm saying all that so that we can go back to the first statement that those working for you really do want to do their best at work. Hire right and you can work from that foundation.
Knowing that will change you as a manager and you will respond to your employees accordingly. You, as a manager, will do more to draw the best out of your employees through example than anything else. When you treat them from the view that they are great assets to the company and you, this literally makes them want to do their best for you. And the best in people can be extraordinary when you learn how to tap it.
Drawing the best out of your people begins with you. You do everything, and I do mean everything, to take care of them, and they'll take care of you.
Even when they suggest things that you know probably won't fly with those above you, fight for them in it. They'll learn about what you did, and will perform even better. It's really all about caring and letting you know you care about who they are. That, more than techniques and strategies, is what draws the greatness that many times lies dormant within the people working for you.
