A new look of customer service is EveR-1, and is the second android created in the world. She is slender, has a clear complexion and can smile. She is modeled after two well-known Korean actresses and has the body shape of another well-known entertainer.
Her skin is made from silicone jelly and she can recognize 400 Korean words, which allows her to hold a basic conversation.
They have also built into her the ability to change facial expressions, including smiling, anger and sadness. She is able to currently move her arms and hands but not her legs. The Korean Institute for Industrial Technology (Kitech) is racing to beat the Japanese by creating a next-generation model that will include a wider range of facial expressions and be able to sit and stand by the end of the year.
Now her is my problem with all of this: If they're going to create these things for use in customer service areas, you'd think they improve on the current model - us!
Not only will we have to deal with human customer service employees that can frown and get grumpy with us, but now the first generation of customer service robots and androids are created with the ability to show anger. Great!
Here's the other thing: I really thought that Wal-mart greeting positions would be safe for a long time. Look out.
Japan already has intelligent robots whose interactive abilities are being used in department stores, office reception areas, bars, restaurants and museums.
Hey, maybe we can all get jobs like oiling the Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz. Or is it massaging silicone? I don't know.
