In this post let's talk about working for a large company in a management position.
Almost anyone in management wants their involvement in the company to make a difference. There a couple of realities you must consider when observing things that you believe need to be changed in a big company.
First of all it's a big company. If you're relatively new to your position, it is going to take some time. Look at Microsoft for example. They know a number of changes that they must make to stay competitive in the market they excel in and the new online market that a number of their competitors have jumped ahead of them in.
Even though they see some of the things needed, it's taking them a huge amount of time to turn the rudder and get the ship going in the right direction. No matter how great of a manager (captain) you are, a ship of that size is going to take a lot longer to turn than a small little boat with a motor.
In a huge company like this, you must face in the direction the company is going. One way that you can change things without being discouraged is to do it in the things around you and in the direction the company is going. There is where you can make your mark and others will see your value.
If you're the type that wants to fight the system, you're really going to have some tough times ahead of you. You'll find out that in large company the system just doesn't buckle quick or easy; even in great companies.
Work where you're at and do great there while improving those things around you. From that position of strength you can gradually move ahead when you've earned the trust of those around you to take some larger steps and help in larger ways.
If this isn't the type of thing that appeals to you, I would highly recommend thinking about working for a smaller company where your contributions can make a much larger impact on the company.
To try to fight a large company's way of doing things will cause so much strain in your life that your job won't be any joy to work at. If you've found yourself always kicking against a brick wall in a large company, consider the things we've talked about here; it will take a lot of the pressure off of you.
