When I was reading an article on management the other day, it talked about a manager knowing what is interconnected and how that interconnection will be affected when making business decisions. Do you think that you know all the intricate connections within the business that will be affected and when, where and how they will be affected?
Now concepts and change within a business need to be simple and easy to understand, to me that's a given. It is the consequences of decisions that are never simple or even able to be seen before hand.
When I say they are not able to be seen before hand, I'm referring to in all its reach, not in being able to foresee some things.
Have you seen decisions made where the impact is measured in a few things and it seems like everything explodes around you as it goes way beyond the ability of those planning the changes to see? I have.
This is why one of the most important things a company and management can have is openness and visibility within the company and its ranks. Missing crucial points that are connected to changes is one of the most costly mistakes you can make.
What's the answer? Like I said openness, communication and everything being visible is one of the keys. The other is that managers must understand what the major connection points within their company or department are. Without knowing this and having that type of culture, anything you do is really like taking a shot in the dark.
