Benefit from our instant gratification culture

instant gratification.jpgWhile we hear a lot today about the instant gratification society and some of its downfalls, there is another side to the issue that can truly enhance your success in business: those who have long-term outlooks and patience.

One thing that a number of businesses, your competitors, do, is to look for quick-fix solutions to problems that eventually can catch up with them. Very few businesses really dig in for the long haul and do things right. Just look at the continuous customer service satisfaction shortfalls that are all around us.

Does this contradict the thought that we must always be fast and nimble? Yes and no. What's the difference if you're fast and you get it wrong? People can be forgiving, but only up to a point. Now this doesn't mean that we sit there in paralysis while our competitors forge ahead of us. It means that we work with a long-term time frame while we look at short-term needs and responses.

This puts us in the place where it eliminates a lot of careless errors, hype and pressure that binds. The other part of this is that doing things with only a short-term way of looking at it, can create a culture of getting things done the easy way. This always leads to mediocrity in our products, services and customer service.

It may not be fashionable in our age, but putting forth hard work with the commitment to stay the course, while adapting as you go, is still the way that companies remain successful.

Those who follow these practices will benefit greatly over those companies that bull ahead regardless of quality.

In business today you have the fast-talking business owners and salespeople who can't think further than tomorrow and what sales need to be made today.  They're ready to make the "quick buck" and end up leaving the customers in their... [Read More]

Daniel Goleman found in his seminal work on 'Emotional Intelligence' (EQ) that if you asked 5 year old children NOT to eat a marshmallow - those few that had the patience and self discipline to resist the temptation - went on to greater health, wealth and personal success than those who couldn't help greedying the cookie. (the majority)

Traditional schooling used to teach 'Self-discipline' rather than instant gratification' - perhaps we should rethink modern teaching methods to bring it back into the curriculum?

Thanks Gary for the ideas spark.

Great thoughts Margaret! Those who are trained to be self-disciplined are those who accomplish what they've set before themselves.

To train children at an early age is a great thought to add to the mix as it makes me think of having a brighter future for us all.
