Are you obsessing as a Manager?

obsessions.jpgI have seen otherwise great managers who move from what I would call 'ordinary' concerns or worries, to what eventually becomes obsessions with things in the workplace.

One of the ways to indentify the difference between normal or obsessive worries is their staying power. Normal worries will shift around or come and go. They will stick with you for a little while and then your mind will travel to something else.

Obsession enter in when have a more permanent hold upon your mind, they come back over and over again, at times over periods of years. Usually they involve what you consider threats to yourself or those you care about.

Have you ever had someone in a management position obsess upon you? If you have, you know the uncomfortable, and at times, unfair consequences it can bring.

So how can we deal with this if this is part of our make-up at times?

One of the ways that others have tackled this problem is to write down what it is that continuously haunts them about their job or a specific thing within the job. Then once it is written, they read it to themselves; usually once a day. What they find out, contrary to what you may think, is that the problem starts to diminish and they simply let it go.

The reason that this happens is that instead of trying to grunt and groan to forget it, which actually reinforces the problem and enlarges it, you face it, and the strength of it reduces to nothing. At least with most people this is how it works.

Try this if there is a problem or perceived problem at work that continually puts fear or obsessively, continually presents itself to your mind.

Have you ever had these types of struggles? What did you do to conquer it?
