One of the unending weaknesses in almost all businesses is that there are just an awful lot of people that are not very creative. That along with the reality that there is always a time when businesses go through an overall period of inertia and complacency.
One of the weaknesses of these times is that whatever way things have been done, they simply keep going on endlessly. This is in spite of new technology, tools and ideas that have been available for transformation.
The great thing that you can get out of this is that this also provides tremendous opportunity for you to come up with things that can breath life into the company.
What is the way that you can take advantage this situation? Find something within the company that is causing a lot of problems and frustrations and develop ideas that help to solve it. Not only will this put you in front of the eyes of your bosses, it can also add new value to your customer; whether it's fellow employees or consumers or your products or services.
Why this concept is so powerful is because you aren't trying to recreate something from scratch, but rather are working from an existing situation. You are taking something that is familiar to the participants and giving it some new wrinkle or twist to improve its performance.
As a manager, you should be looking at all aspects of the business you're involved with and look for what is frustrating fellow workers, bosses or customers. Then once you identify what they are, attack them and solve the problems.
Not only is this fun, rewarding and potentially lucrative, but it keeps you in the mind of the company as someone that needs to be kept if there are ever times when cuts are in the wind.
It's just a great win for everyone involved. Have you found unique ways to solve company problems?

So far, Know More Media has been great at solving problems on the fly, I think. I've been a part of several experiences where we had to fix something fast, and I can attest that solving problems quickly is a great business skill to have. It takes teamwork and a willingness to adapt and change, to stop doing things the way they always were before if necessary. Good post, Gary.
