Do you want to know a question that you can ask your employees everyday that will bring you their loyalty far beyond your wildest dreams? Ask them if they need any help or can I help you in any way?
You'd be surprised at what this will do to change your area of responsibility.
If your employees don't know how to do something; give him training. If there is something that has come up that brings a scheduling conflict: solve it for them. Just keep asking!
In the course of a person's life there are continuing changes, events and true emergencies. Be there to help them solve them. I'm not talking about those people that live a life in continuous and endless self-inflicted problems, but people that have these things come their way through the natural course of life.
What developing the habit of asking your employees if you can help them does, is to open the door for them to talk to you without feeling intimidated or that they are interfering with things. It invites them to talk about what is really needed. I've seen this happen with great managers throughout the years and they really have the respect and loyalty of their workers as they know that the manager is approachable and they can talk about anything that they really need with them.
When you do this it helps to solve problems on the job that you didn't know even existed. It can bring up gaps in training that have failed to be met. This helps to empower your employees to get the job done right for the company among numerous other benefits. All this from a simple question that they will be thankful for that you've asked.
Have you ever seen or used this in your experience? What were the results?
