This is one word that is thrown around so much that in my estimation it has become about meaningless. You hear about the need to secure "talent," the competition for "talent," and the need to aggressively pursue "talent."
I think we need a new word for it, how about you? To me the word "quality" has a much better and descriptive ring to what we need to be pursuing in our hires.
After all talent really can't be defined or measured. What would it be in an internet company, someone that could write an extra bit of code but can't get along with anybody? Do you hire based upon the code writing ability?
Another reason so-called talent is meaningless is because there are so many numerous positions in the company that may need to be filled. This is where the term "fit" comes in. That's a good word to me also. How will the potential hire fit in with the company culture? Will they add to the culture or tear it apart? Those questions are far more important than some ambiguous talent search.
This seems like a word created by certain types of employee wannabes that are trying to angle for a higher wage, after all you need to pay for that type of "talent."
To me quality and fit should be terms we think of far beyond talent as that which determines the type of people we want working in our companies and departments.
