The lowest form of leadership is one that is bestowed by title. How many times have you seen one of the worse possible decisions of putting the wrong person in a leadership position? Everyone but the one appointing the individual knows what a disaster it is.
It reminds me of a young man I talk to that always mentions that he wants to move up into a leadership position in the company. His whole viewpoint of the position is that of having a title and "authority." I keep telling him that a title can never make a leader, a title simply will recognize that which is already there. At least this will happen in a healthy, honest company.
What advice have I given him?
First of all I asked him a question: Does anyone look to you for advice or answers now? Blank look.
Then I asked him if he is being an example to the other employees of excellent service? Blank look.
Finally I asked him why he should be considered for leadership? Blank look.
He simply wanted a title that bestowed upon him authority. There was nothing else in his search to be a leader.
I started to tell him the things that he needed to be and do to enter into a leadership position, and his response was, Why should I do that, nobody else does? Basically I told him that when he found out the answer to that question, maybe he would be ready to enter into management.
