With the growing number of patent and trademark applications, the Patent and Trademark Office growing the number of employees that are working from their homes.
There are two factors that contribute to this being deal for the PTO employees working from home.
Federaltimes.com says that "the agency’s main functions — reviewing patent and trademark applications — are done by employees using electronic tools. Additionally, employees have objective and well-defined performance goals."
There is something that hits me in this statement that can help a lot of companies. Now the first part of it is something that is fairly obvious. When the great majority or all the work done by employees is done through electronic tools, you have the perfect situation for teleworkers.
One of the things I do like here is how many problems are addressed in this first area alone. You deal with gas prices and environment (emissions), right off the top. What if you're a growing company that is stuck in your office lease or building you own? This is the type of strategy that could allow you to grow tremendously without additional overhead.
With employees maybe coming into the office once a week for contact, strategies and team meetings, you could have them come in on different days to use the office area as needed.
One of the things that the PTO uses is a Web-based reservation system so that someone can reserve a workstation when they come into the office. This avoids the potential conflict that could result if workers came in whenever they wanted and didn't have the needed resources available.
