Managers and business leaders will all have to come to grips with the stress and tension that will inevitably come with the job. While techniques to ease the tension are available and need to be used, we still must keep in mind and understand what the source of our tension is.
Most the time it is a bunch of little things that add up over time and eventually build into a huge mountain. We must learn to let go of the tension and let it ooze and ease out of our systems, or we'll explode within.
Here are a few techniques you can use to ease stress and tension. Just be aware that one may work for someone better than another. You need to experiment a little to see what works for you.
Passive Relaxation
This is just what it says; here you don't move a thing or a muscle. You can listen to a tape or if you've learned to do it on your own, begin to see or imagine the different parts of your body relaxed and warm while getting very heavy. It's similar when you see a child's eyes getting heavy when they're ready to go to sleep or their bodies becoming very limp. It's the same principle, just induced by your thoughts.
Progressive Relaxation
This is the opposite of above as you involve your physical self here. How you do it is to tense up specific parts of your body, individually and one at a time, then hold that tension in that part for a while, then let it go. You can practice doing this quickly or slowly, one may work better than another. For a number of people this teaches them how to let go of tension through releasing in.
Relaxed Imagery
This is unique in that here you see yourself in relaxed, calm and soothing situations, like laying in a hammock alone under a clear sky or whatever it is that really calms you within.
Verbal affirmation
This is where you use statements or maybe quotes that are encouraging and positive that can result in an indepth state of relaxation.
Meditation
This is different in that it is used in a way that can focus on a number of different things which could include an object, word, thought or even your breathing. The idea is to get your thoughts off of that which is causing you stress so that the end result is a calm mind.
All these things have been very helpful to people that work or live in very stressful environments or are facing difficult situations or circumstances. You could try one or even combine them to see what works best for you. It really is helpful once you find your rest in these techniques.
