I remember Stan Davis and Bill Davidson commenting in their book 2020 Vision, about letting the "form of the organization follow the function of the business (p. 115)."
Another time in my personal experience, when others and myself were considering various options that were before us, someone came up with this profound thought: "...let all this stuff come forth, and then from there we'll develop and put structure around it."
While these two statements were a little different, they referred to a similar problem that haunts most businesses and management - the temptation to create this permanent structure so that they can fill it with things safely. This may do more to harm innovation and creativity beyond anything else.
Taking it to the creativity and innovative stage of specific new products or services, don't try to cross all the t's and dot all the i's; just let the process get going.
In other words, start to execute what you see, don't think of anything else but getting what it is you're wanting to accomplish get done. After that you can think of ways to enhance it, improve it and put finishing touches on it.
Oddly enough, you'll find out that it can even be easier to manage when something is in process, than sitting there trying to find out a hundred things that could go wrong before you get going.
Sometimes the best way to manage is to get out of the way. Have you ever found that to be true?
