Sometimes we can be so overwhelmed by the things swirling around our businesses or departments, that we can really lose sight of things that are going on in relationship to the big picture.
Here is a simple tool you can use to deal with this continuous situation.
It is called SWOT, which means - Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. A quick SWOT analysis can aid businesses in scanning the current climate to unveil ways to maximize business opportunities.
I know that the term 'brainstorming' is overused alot, but in the case of SWOT, it fits into that arena perfectly. Used consistently over a long period of time, it can be a real competitive advantage. It will give you an honest look into the existing strengths and weaknesses of you department or business.
By focusing on these few areas, it will help you to uncover several areas:
- it will help you to see where you need to focus to grow
- you can get insight into the numerous changes happening in your industy and how it can impact your business
- the threats you will face and how to deal with them will come to the fore
While this can be done individually, it is much more powerful in a representative group. Anybody within this discussion should be able to voice whatever they want concerning the areas being focused on.
One of the things this tool does is to force you to look at your strengths and weaknesses realistically. That is the hardest part of anything in management or business leadership; to minimize your real weaknesses can be a potential devastating blow.
Another thing that it does well is to force you to look at external threats that you may not normally take the time to do. This could be competitive as well as regulatory impacts or how a community may view what your business represents.
Using the SWOT analysis as a quick and simple tool to reveal the big picture and put you on the road to implementing the necessary steps to reduce the threats to your company. It is a great way to position your company to take advantage of the shifting opportunities.
