One of the great complaints and frustrations of managers I have heard throughout the years has been the lack of motivation of employees. Have you ever had this problem?
Now think for a minute, what is it that employees work for? Is it primarily for money? That's part of it. What about recognition? Well, that's another piece of the puzzle. What about so they can get things to make their lives more free and comfortable? Again, that's yet another piece we can add to the mixture. But is those the things that will make great employees? Don't most workplaces offer these to one degree or another? I think so.
If you've ever studied great companies though, you will find that those that will work for them beyond the call of duty, are those that believe that they are working for a great and worthwhile purpose. This is the only real motivator that will drive men and women beyond the thought that all they have is a 9-5 job.
It is that purpose that will drive them to not only work harder, but smarter, more enthusiastic and with more passion. I hope that you believe that because in my own experience and the companies that are great to work for always have this as the greatest factor in people wanting to work for them. People need to have meaning in what they give their lives and time to. If they don't, then nothing will be able to motivate them.
What is our job as leaders or managers then? To make sure that the vision and purpose of the company permeates and fills the hearts and minds of the employees. It must be simple and easy to understand as well as powerful and compelling; something that people love to give their time and efforts to.
Now that, above anything else, is the great motivator that above all things will move your employees.
So make it your major aim to help your employees see that their work and working where they're at, adds great value to their lives. This will do more to create great employees than anything else.
