Don't look down on your day of small things. When you are in management the easiest way to advance is to take those types of jobs handed to you and be faithful and dedicated to accomplishing them. This is almost a guarantee to successful advancement, if that is your goal.
It is very easy to look down upon assignments that don't look like they are the way to advancement as stumbling-blocks to your goal. But the truth is that those that can and will do small things great, can than be trusted to do larger things.
There is an even more elemental factor to consider in all of this: don't do it for advancement at all, do it with the attitude that no matter what happens in your job, you will always perform to the best of your ability. If your eye is always on the prize, instead of doing it out of pure desire to do a good, solid job, you'll be always thinking of ways to impress those over you to be noticed.
I can tell you that there is nothing that is more noticed than someone doing the "small" things great.
Now having said that, I think there is a time to ask your supervisors if they were happy with the work. What this does is reinforce in their minds who it was that completed it. In the endless things that are dealt with day-to-day, it can be easy to forget.
Yet if you do this over a period of time, and the response is positive, this is a good way to introduce the idea that you wouldn't mind being given projects that are more demanding and the desire that you want to move up in the company. Many people never let their managers know that they are even interested. If you do want to move up, you need to let it be known that you are interested.
