I know that in a number of companies the attitude of owners or top level managment is that they think that employees should simply be thankful for a job and paycheck. But to remain competitive and to keep your employees engaged, there needs to be something much more than a paycheck to motivate them to excellence.
Regina M. Miller mentions in her blog, a conversation she had with someone in a top position in an energy firm:
"I had dinner with some friends last night and one of them who is in a high level leadership role at an energy company told me he was bored. How could an "energy company" have bored people? The ironies of life in a corporation, right? Anyway, how about employer brands that are designed to give people awesome career experiences through challenge, stretching and building skill? This is the way people stay engaged and turned on!! And good leaders who are turned on and energized are more likely to energize others. In the words of my friend and mentor Bev Kaye - "stuck managers, stick people!"
I found myself thinking the same thing that Regina did in thinking about how could someone be bored in that position. To me, anyone that has to deal with countless situations day-to-day would seem to be engaged and excited.
There a lot of things that a manager could say concerning a management position, but bored, at least to me, is unique.
But I do like her comments of companies designing things in such a way that it will challenge, stretch and build someone's skills up. I agree that these are the types of things that keep people engaged and will pass on to those that they manage, the same sense of participation and challenge.
