Many managers and business owners believe that a continuous influx of large amounts of money is the answer to business or department problems. The same thing happens with employees as the thought is that getting more employees will solve all problems.

Of course I’m not referring to the general day-to-day operational expenses, or if there is an expansion of some sort the need to get a loan for it. Remember what I’m talking about: problems and problem solving. In most cases money and more bodies is not the answer.

I remember Peter Drucker saying one time that if you have a lot of employee internal squabbling, the real problem is that you have too many people that have too much time on their hands. That point is really true.

Interestingly enough, when you have too much money, it takes away a lot of the motivation for creativity and innovation; as a matter of fact it can hinder it. If the dotcom bomb taught anything it should have been this: it isn’t too difficult to spend a lot of money in a short time with no results.

But take into consideration Microsoft. While sitting on billions of dollars in cash, in the great majority of new software and tech related products and services, they have become the follower rather than the leader.

So whenever the thought of the word “more” comes into your mind, think if that is really the thing that will solve the problem. Just fill in the blank after the word “more” and you will get the picture.

I know that you may think I’m talking politically but contemplate all the times when something comes up and the government throws money at it, and nothing really changes, nothing really improves.

That’s the same thing to keep in mind with business.
