
The true secret to business success is the ability to spot trends ahead of the other people seeking to know them. One of the keys to this is the ability to peer into perceptions people have of themselves concerning what is missing in their lives.
Now before I go further you need to understand this: once you read or hear about some of the "trendsetter" practicals that are happening, for the most part it is already too late to enter in at the beginning to reap the huge rewards.
The thing that sets apart the continuous winners versus one-time successes, is knowing what is behind the reason for the trend that is happening, not only the practical outcome of it. For example, why is Starbucks so popular? Is the thing to get out of it to build some type of similar business and follow that type of strategy, or is there an underlying cultural phenomenon happening that Starbucks serves as an outlet for?
How you answer a question and thought like that is what will determine your ability to understand how trends can be served in a multitude of ways.
Back to what people believe is missing in their lives - there are a number of answers to that, all the way across the board.
Thinking of that, what is it that people are reading a lot about today? Do the names J.K. Rowling and Dan Brown bring any thoughts to mind? They are the authors of the popular series of Harry Potter, and with Dan Brown, The Da Vinci Code. Why are people reading those books and what are people seeking to experience in those pages?
Answers to these types of questions are what brings understanding to the invisible, underlying reason behind what is popular at the time. The answer isn't to write another version of Harry Potter with different names. Oh, maybe you'll make a little money on something like that, but it misses the point. Don't look at the obvious thing that is seen by the eye, but rather that unknowing magnet that is flowing through the hearts and minds of people.
Once you understand what that is at a particular season in time, you can make, create and offer various products and services that will spur people into buying whatever it is you are offering. That is the secret to real trending versus those that just look at the outward signs and think that copying that is what will bring them success. It won't, if you don't understand the underlying reason why it is successful in the first place.
