There have been probably more mistakes among managers and business owners with this one temptation then will all others. There is nothing more heady and desired at times than the easy, quick fix.
a
What is the problem with that though? Something that is that quick and easy isn’t fixed. Notice the words used here: fixed. If something needs to be fixed, that means that it’s broken. Broken things take time to fix – period.
a
Now why the temptation to do it that fast? It is nothing else than wanting to either not face it or desiring to get on with something else that is more to your liking. In a business you just can’t do this.
a
These things I just said are fairly obvious. But the underlying reason is more difficult to get hold of. The underlying reason is really that you don’t want to go through a process; you want whatever it is instantaneously. It’s one of the great reasons for people to not succeed in life in general, and management and leadership specifically.
a
To succeed in anything in life means that you will have to take steps, retrace those steps and then take steps again. That’s simply how life is in anything.
a
The other thing is that, just like any fix, it only gives a short-lived high and feeling of euphoria, before it disappears and you have to face reality again.
a
This is the real issue: what is really there that needs to be dealt with. Don’t shy away from it or attempt to hide it by deluding yourself that something instantaneous is going to happen and everything will be all right.
a
If you think in terms of all steps forward are a process, you should be able to deal with the challenges before you as they really are and need to be handled, rather than pretending that the good feeling you have from a temporary reprieve has made the situation go away.
a
There nothing worse than the day that this comes up behind you again, and you don’t see it coming. But if you take heed to these thoughts, that doesn’t have to happen to you!
