What was the solution?

First of all I sat down and talked with him explaining what I just did to you. In all honesty I revealed what the job entailed that he wanted to enter into, why his personality type would struggle tremendously in a hard-sale environment, and that I would probably be setting him up for failure.
a
He had no problem with my assessment of the situation. Now you have to realize that I have made it my business to know my employees throughout the years and develop a healthy, mutually respectful interaction with them so I had earned the right to speak in this way and be heard.

But, that didn’t deal with the real problem that he was telling me. It wasn’t that he was concerned at this time with trying to make a big career move in the company or had a need of a lot more money, rather the whole situation centered on him wanting to leave the department he was in, for a number of reasons.
a
Since I pretty much knew that, I communicated with him that now that I knew how much he wanted to leave the department he worked in, I would proactively start looking for opportunities within the company where he could fit in successfully.
a
He understood that the reason I wouldn’t give him the job he was seeking was because it wouldn’t take care of the problem he had, it would just shift it to another department, and he would still have to deal with it.
a
Everything was above board and communicated openly and effectively so that the situation was understood between the two of us. Since he was willing to stay on until the opening he would fit into came about, and he knew from the way that I dealt with others in the company that what I said I would do, I didn’t have to force him into something for the purpose of getting him out of the department.
