Of course when you’re in management, what one person thinks is a powerful trait another may think as worthless or irrelevant. Still, there are a number of things that I have found common among excellent bosses throughout the years.

And if you’re a small business owner or manager, you have a great opportunity to use your skills to make a tremendous impact upon a business. What you do will set the tone for the whole operation.

In my personal experience when managing, I have found that it doesn’t deter from performance of the employees at all to interact with them, care about their lives outside of work, and ask how their doing personally and creating an atmosphere that is fun, challenging and rewarding.

Rosa, from Lifehack, gives several examples of what a great manager’s outlook will be toward their employees. Here are a few:
Managers believe that people are innately good. Without this core belief and faith in people, great management is not possible.
a
Managers believe they do not work on their people, they work with them; they enable and empower them.
a
Managers believe that “empowerment” comes from within, and has more to do with self-motivation and innate talent than with the acceptance of authority. They get their cues from the person, not from the task or process.
a
Managers believe that all people have strengths which can be made stronger, and that their weaknesses can be compensated for to become irrelevant.
I wholeheartedly agree with this list. I have never been as satisfied in my job as seeing the mutual respect and response that the workers had when these characteristics were shown forth.
