
Most people have heard of Six Sigma, but usually when the term is mentioned there is either confusion and a blank look or the thought that it is for huge manufacturing companies and not for the normal business. I want to help you understand one easy aspect of it today and how you may use it to improve your business; no matter how big your business is.

The major thing to keep in mind concerning Six Sigma is that it always relates to the reality that there can be continuous improvement made on a product, process or service. The emphasis is on the word “process.”

In many businesses, including large ones, they never really get to stage one of what everything is all about. Stage one of the process is simply knowing that there is a problem and then going through the stages of discovering and defining what that problem is.

The concept is of course very simple and seemingly rudimentary, and yet how come so many businesses fail every year if it is so easy to understand and follow?Business by its very nature will entail continuous problems that arise. That’s the nature of the beast. It is living in the reality of that which determines success and failure in your business or department goals.
The first stage of Six Sigma deals with this very issue: the problem must be defined. If the problem isn’t defined then how can there be a solution? The answer is that there can’t be.
Any other thing that you do which is done before the problem is defined is pretty much a waste of time. You can’t aim at nothing and get there.
Don’t waste any of your energy doing anything before you are sure that what it is that is causing the problem has been positively, irrefutably identified. That is the beginning place of looking for solutions; nowhere else. To go forward based upon anything else is a recipe for failure.
