We are continuing on in our study of how to develop a number of different areas to serve with your business so that you are not overly dependent on any one.
On this post we’ll talk about the cleaning business as a representative of the service industry.
Now the best way to look at this is to consider that there are two distinct markets in the cleaning service industry: the home owner and businesses. Each one of these need to be considered in your business strategy.
One of the best ways to do this is to get a couple corporate or industrial contracts that pay a certain amount every month based on an agreed upon contract. This is the base you build your business from.
Once this is established you then would venture into the individual customer with carpet cleaning or house cleaning.
So you have a couple of business accounts that are in reality the most volatile in this particular service industry. Then with the carpet and house cleaning, which are two separate areas of service, you add more safety to your business.
When this is all going you could then think in terms of possibly managing accounts for others. Serviceaster has done this for years. The employees belong to the business that wants your management expertise, but the support system of the work belongs to you. In other words your being contracted or outsourced by another company.
This is a great position to be in with minimal cost besides wages of those managing.
So in the service industry, with this as an example, you can see several different avenues that you can explore to spread your risk.
The main thing to remember is to keep the various outlets connected to your core business. Don’t go off into something that doesn’t compliment what you are doing.
