
For millions of people around the world Jesus was a real person that lived 2,000 years ago. And when you read about Him, specifically in how He interacted with people it is quite extraordinary how He did things the opposite of many would think should be done.

For example when He was searching for those who He was going to train to do His work, he picked many that we wouldn’t think in terms of being “management” material.

But more importantly, and what the subject of this post is about is what He taught about their role.

I want to focus on one thing today: How they were taught to relate to those they were to interact with.

Jesus made one statement to them about this that speaks volumes; basically He said that they shouldn’t think of themselves as being over people in the sense of dominating and controlling them, rather they were to learn to be servants to them.
What? These men considered Jesus to be the God of all, and He was standing there telling them that they weren’t being called to dominate other people. Hmmm.

Today we still have debates and discussion about styles of management. I don’t think that there can be any doubt though about which one is more conducive to better results. Hands down the style that respects and cares about those that are in their charge is the one that produces the greatest results.

Usually where people stumble in this area is that they find one situation that may have had to be handled strongly, and from there it is determined that it is the best way to handle all problems. Not so.

Most of the time difficult people result from bad hiring practices in the first place. Once the hiring has been done, and if the person doesn’t fit into your culture, then you will have to probably take some difficult actions.

But overall, if you hire right in the first place, the great majority of employees will respond to those who will empower and encourage them to do their job rather then commanding, controlling or threatening to.

That’s the biggest thing to remember in management: learn to be an empowerer of people, that’s one of the greatest motivators that will push the workers to do their jobs far better than any other way that has been tried.
