Communication and Success in Your IT Department

In a study by US business consultancy The Hacket Group it was discovered that companies that grant their IT leaders a senior position in business management, greatly increases the performance of its technology departments.

a

The study took into account 200 firms’ It departments and measured their efficiency and effectiveness according to IT Week. The results were that “the top 12% had CIOs whose position encompassed a senior role in business management.”

a

The findings also revealed that more than two-thirds of the best performing CIOs were in direct contact with the CEO, in contrast to 20% of the others.

a

Report author Scott Holland says this, “Every one of the world-class IT departments had a senior IT person with a seat at the management table and most had direct communication with the CEO. They weren’t necessarily on the board of directors, but they were high up enough to be part of the governing body and be involved in strategic decisions.”

a

There are some that comment saying that it isn’t so much the position that is the key element, but rather that the lines of communication are directly open to the CEOs.

a

Having this direct contact enables the CIO and his co-workers to make sure that they are on the same page with the overall goals and encourages the whole department knowing that its input is being heard and the CEO is aware about what they are doing.

a

For those wanting more of a voice in matters, it is encouraged that in addition to their technical skills they also include stronger manager and leadership skill levels. These are the things that make a difference in strong, successful IT departments and the average ones.

a

Just trying to force these things into being don’t’ work, rather the continuous reminder of the importance of technology coupled with the hiring of candidates that not only have the technical skills but the leadership as well, is the way that the doors to upper management are opened.
