Growth is one of the most treasured results that all managers or business owners seek after, and can also be a great danger if not managed properly.
a
While it may seem right to accept every area of growth that comes your way, all of us need to have a strategy and concept in place of how fast we should allow things to grow.
a
If you remain fanatically devoted to your USP, which you should, then the answer to that question isn’t as difficult to comprehend as it seems at first.
a
So what is the answer to the question? You can grow as quick as you are able as long as it doesn’t cause you to dilute your USP.
a
Now with that in mind, there is a second question to answer that will determine if fast growth is even able to happen within your chosen business. The question is this: Do you serve a niche market? Most small businesses do that very thing. Offering nonstandard or customized products or services will make it very hard to chase a strategy that would result in fast growth.
a
The reason why is that the nature of customization is quality. And if you have that as a part of your USP, you cannot abandon it and survive, not even in the pursuit of quick growth.
a
So one way we must manage growth is to first determine if your product or service is one that is customized and in a special market. If it is, you should drop the idea of quick growth. The two can’t mix.
a
The answer in this case is to grow steady, not fast.
