We can no longer afford as managers to simply ignore what motivates different types and age-groups of employees. We must learn how to juggle all of these things if we expect to be successful now and in the future.
a
Keeping that in mind, we need to continually be reminded of the different ways that people relate to work today; we ignore it at our peril.
a
So then, looking at ways to understand Gen Xers and how to help them be a great addition to your team; here are several more things that can help you understand them better.
a
They relate to:
A manager who earns his or her respect.
Versus
Respect based on position as the owner or manager.
a
Freedom to challenge authority.
Versus
Being told what to do.
a
Being part of a highly motivated and committed team of people.
Versus
Loyalty to the owner or manager.
a
Opportunities for advancement based upon work performance.
Versus
Promotions based upon longevity.
a
Personal satisfaction with the job
Versus
401k programs; life insurance, stock options, and other perks.
a
Opportunities to learn new things.
Versus
“Same old; same old.”
a
The more and more we look at Gen Xers, the more we have to realize that a job is simply not a job to them. It is somewhat of an extension of themselves, and they expect that to continue in the workplace.
a
To try to stubbornly fight that and not understand what motivates them is a sure way to lose the value that they can add to you and your company.
